What is Urbex?

Urbex, short for Urban Exploration, is the exploration of abandoned or hidden man-made structures, such as old factories, hospitals, bunkers, or forgotten buildings. It often involves photography and a fascination with decay, history, and forgotten places.

Trading Locations?

At the moment I don't trade any abandoned locations!

Is Urbex legal?

It depends on the location. In many cases, entering abandoned properties without permission is considered trespassing and is illegal. Some explorers obtain permission from property owners, which is the safest and most legal way to do it.

Is Urbex dangerous?

Yes, it can be. Hazards include unstable floors, broken glass, asbestos, mold, collapsing structures, wild animals, and even encounters with security or squatters. Always explore cautiously, wear protective gear, and never go alone.

Do you take things from the locations?

No. A core principle in the urbex community is: “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.” Removing items from sites is considered disrespectful and can be illegal.

How do you find abandoned places to explore?

Many explorers use Google Maps, research local history, follow tips from other urbexers, or stumble upon places by accident. However, most keep exact locations secret to prevent vandalism or theft.

What equipment do you need for Urbex?

Basic gear includes a flashlight, sturdy boots, gloves, a camera, mask (for dust or mold), and sometimes a tripod. In some cases, explorers also carry walkie-talkies, first aid kits, or even rope for climbing.

Can I do Urbex alone?

It’s not recommended. Exploring with at least one partner is safer in case of injury or emergency. Solo urbex can be extremely risky in unknown or unstable environments.

What’s the difference between Urbex and vandalism?

Urbex is about exploration, respect, and documentation not destruction. Vandalism involves damaging or tagging property, which goes against the urbex code of ethics.

Why do people do Urbex?

People are drawn to urbex for the thrill, photography, history, and atmosphere. It offers a rare glimpse into forgotten places frozen in time, telling stories that are often overlooked or lost.
