In the late 1920s, the department of Seine-et-Oise recorded a worrying resurgence of cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, especially in urban centers then in full industrial and demographic growth. About 10,000 tuberculosis patients died each year, and in 1929 an epidemic affected 700,000 people in France.
