Power Plant IM

The power station was built in 1921 by the Charbonnage de Monceau Fontaine and ran on coal. During the interwar period it expanded its capacity to 27 MW and around 1930 to 47 MW. The modern central plant, fueled with pulverized coal, was selected in the years 1938-40 for the experiments of engineer Albert De Smaele.

In 1950 a new power station was put into use next to the old one. An almost identical power station was built in 1953 in Marchienne-au-Pont at coal station 19, where the Charbonnage de Monceau Fontaine had also produced electricity since 1912. Both branches were operated by Intercom (later merged with Electrabel).

After a report showed that the plant was responsible for 10% of carbon dioxide emissions in Belgium, Greenpeace protested against the plant. The plant, which had a capacity of 92 MW at the time, was closed in 2007 together with the 57 meter high cooling tower
